"We've been a family business since
1903"
|
 |
Sidney and Hacking was founded in 1903 by Norman Sidney & Charles Hacking. The company was first
located near the corner of Keen and Woodlark Streets in the Lismore CBD. The business grew steadily and
in 1932 Charles died leaving Norman and his two sons Stan and Archie to continue the business. |
 |
After Archie's death in 1960, Stan's twin sons Max and Brian were given shares in the business. Max
joined him at the age of fifteen. "It was a flow-on from the family, my twin brother and I joined
the business," Max said. Their father Stan died in 1972 and they carried on the business as a
partnership.

When bulk milk tanks came in, there wasn't a need for dairy products any more. "We are
plumber and sheet metal workers," Max said. "In the old days we used to make the cream buckets and
all the dairy products. Nowadays we have moved into stainless steel fabrication. Customers keep
coming back because we have looked after them all their life - we rely on return work," Max said.
"To survive this long we must be doing the right thing somewhere along the line." |
 |
The company has a long history in Lismore. They did the first stage of Lismore Base
Hospital in 1968, and connected the first house in Lismore, a doctor's house, to the sewerage
system.
It was in the late 1920s when the prosperous business outgrew its original
premises and was shifted into 83 Keen Street.
|
| In 1988 the business relocated to its present location at 21 Habib Drive South
Lismore. In 1999 Max's son Andrew bought the business and he continues the
family enterprise today. |
